Bound in publishers white vellum (Heart of the Antarctic), quarter vellum with gray boards, bumped corner (Antarctic Book), gilt titles on spine, gilt figurines of two penguins. Top edge gilt, uncut. Sewn-in brown silk bookmarks. Tipped-in photogravure frontispieces, 4 color tipped-in portraits in Antarctic Book. Over 200 additional illustrations throughout. Contains 3 charts and panorama in pocket at rear of Volume 2. This is a limited edition of 300 copies, containing the signatures of all 16 members of the Antarctic Shore Party. Signatures are contained in The Antarctic Book, which is the 2nd state, corrected publication. Provenance: Invoice from E. Joseph Sawyer (London Bookseller, 1988), to Dr. Morton McMicheal of Maine. (Renard 1444).
Comments: This book details the journey of E.H. Shackleton and the Nimrod Expedition, to reach the South Pole and climb Mt. Erebus. He succeeded in reaching the Magnetic South Pole, but was forced to turn back, 97 miles short of his goal. An exceptional copy.
