Description

First edition of 1999: Victory Without War by President Richard Nixon, inscribed to Gen. Bruce Palmer, Jr., deputy commanding general of American troops in Vietnam.

Octavo, 336pp. Black boards, gilt lettering on spine. A first edition, with full number line on the copyright page. Light foxing to leafends, solid text block. In the publisher’s near fine dust jacket, retail price on the front flap.

Inscribed on the half title: “To General Bruce Palmer – Who understands the real world – With best wishes from Richard Nixon / 4-24-89.” Includes a TLS from Nixon, praising Palmer’s book on Vietnam. A great association copy.

Gen. Bruce Palmer Jr. (1913-2000) served as acting Chief of Staff of the United States Army in 1972 and commander of II Field Force, the largest Army Corp deployed in Vietnam. While serving as Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army, reporting to General William Westmoreland, many historians believe that “Palmer was really the Chief of Staff, while Westmoreland was making speeches about Vietnam.” Palmer retired from the Army in 1974 as a four-star general and wrote two books: The 25 Year War: America’s Military Role in Vietnam and Intervention in the Caribbean: The Dominican Crisis of 1965.
