Emily Platt Hastings (1850-1919) was the wife of General Russell Hastings and the niece of President Rutherford B. Hayes. Her husband, General Hastings, served under General Hayes during the Civil War. When the two decided to marry, Miss Platt was living in the White House with her uncle, affording the rare opportunity for a White House wedding. At the time of this inscription, Mrs. Hastings was living in Bermuda with General Hastings, but remained in frequent contact with “Uncle Ruddy,” back in Fremont, Ohio.
