Robert A. Taft was a conservative republican who served in the United States Senate from 1939-1953. He was the son of President William Howard Taft. He sought the republican presidential nomination three times, but was defeated with each attempt. He is best remembered for his work to slow the New Deal expansion his constraints on organization labor with the Taft-Hartley Labor Act of 1947.
