Description
Signed by Frederick Buechner, the first edition of A Long Day’s Dying, with a self-deprecating inscription.
Octavo, [10], 267pp, [3]. Full black cloth, title in gilt on spine. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page, no additional printings listed. Solid text block, jacket flaps previously affixed to front and rear pastedown, a very good example. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $3.00 retail price on front flap, shelf worn, with a small closed hole along rear flap fold. Very good condition.
Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: “I was only a few years older than Patrick when I wrote this. Whenever I glance at it, I am embarrassed. The fact that for many people it remains my best known book embarrasses me still more. Nonetheless, I inscribe it with all the best wishes. For Patrick, Christopher, Celia, and Greg Ross. Frederick Buechner / August 1987.”
Includes a laid-in postcard signed by Buechner: “29.vii.89 / Dear Mr. Ross, I share your horror and would be happy to sign the ancient volume. Best wishes, Frederick Buechner.”
