Octavo, xvi, 17-631pp, [1pp ad for Innocents Abroad]. Publisher’s original brown cloth, title in gilt on front cover and spine. Solid text block, light wear to rear hinge, still sound. Cloth heavily worn, with twine visible at head and tail of spine, rubbed corners and covers, sunned spine. Light toning to edges of leaves. All four typographic errors mentioned in BAL are present, indicating first issue text. Illustrated frontispiece with “Titan’s Moses” caption (State B). Frontispiece portrait with slanted lines on lapel (State B).
