Dedicated by Chaplain Stewart to Captain William Finch, U.S. Navy, who commanded the Vincennes during this first circumnavigation of the world by an American warship. Stewart had earlier authored Private Journal of a Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, and Residence at the Sandwich Islands, in the Years 1822, 1823, 1824, and 1825 to record his stay in the Hawaiian Islands. His familiarity with the language enabled his keen observations of Polynesian culture.
