A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle was first published by Farrar, Straus and Cudahy in 1962 after being rejected by at least 26 publishers, many of whom felt the book was too complex or controversial for children’s literature. Despite the initial skepticism, the novel quickly gained acclaim, winning the prestigious Newbery Medal in 1963. (Anatomy of Wonder II, 662)
