First edition of Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner, an ex-library copy with the publisher’s first state dust jacket affixed to endpapers.

Octavo, 384pp. Black cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine. Top edge dyed red. No additional printings listed on copyright page. Slight lean to text block, rear hinge starting. Remnant of checkout label on front free endpaper. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, with $2.50 retail price on front flap, loss along bottom of spine. Ex-library copy with dust jacket flaps pasted down to endpapers. Fold-out map at rear. A good copy of one of Faulkner’s best-known novels, supporting his Nobel Prize in Literature win in 1949.

William Faulkner (1897-1962) was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recognized for A Fable in 1955 and The Reivers in 1963. The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, and Light in August were recognized by The Modern Library on their 1998 list of 100 Best English-language Novels of the 20th Century. Faulkner primarily set his stories in the American South, many of which took place in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County.
