Joseph P. Tumulty (1879-1954) was Woodrow Wilson’s private secretary from 1911-1921. A New Jersey political operative, he first served Wilson during his governorship and followed him to Washington in 1913. In a position now known as the White House Chief of Staff, Tumulty served for the entire two terms of the Wilson administration. Tumulty published his memoir, Woodrow Wilson As I Know Him, in 1921.
