Addresses of the President of the United States on the Occasion of His Visit to South America, signed limited edition, presented to his son, Lt. Colonel James Roosevelt.

Quarto, [iv], [1]-97pp, [10]. Full tan pigskin, raised bands on spine, Great Seal of the United States on copper plaque affixed to front cover. Silk doublures and endpapers. Top edge gilt, uncut edges. Housed in leather and marbled pull-off slipcase, rubbed at edges and wear to laid on marbled paper. Closed tear to pages 45/46. Limitation page states: “In Commemoration of the Visit of the President of the United States to the Pan American Peace Conference in South America November and December, Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-six, seventy-five copies of his addresses have been designed and printed by the United States Government Printing Office, Washington District of Columbia, April, Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-seven.” (Halter 193, Appendix B) Signed on tipped-in limitation leaf by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and presented to Lieutenant Colonel James Roosevelt, United States Marine Corps Reserve. Inscription reads: “From his affectionate Father, Franklin D. Roosevelt.”

Publishing records at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library indicate that “In all, seventy-five copies were printed, fifty copies in full pigskin with double box type slipcase and twenty-five copies half bound with marbled sides and conventional single slip cases.” Subsequent sale receipts and invoices from the the Roosevelt Library indicate that while 50 copies in full leather were planned, only 7 were ever produced in full leather and another 20 in half leather. The full leather copies were intended for the South American dignitaries who hosted President Roosevelt on his trip in 1936. The balance of this edition “remains unaccounted for,” which is why only a handful of copies have ever been cataloged. The few copies that survive were given as Christmas gifts in 1936 to close associates of President Roosevelt. This limited edition is arguably the scarcest of all the Christmas gifts that President Roosevelt distributed while in office. (Horowitz 77)
