Octavo, xvii, [3], 310pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine. Illustrated endpapers. The first printing, with no additional printings mentioned on copyright page. Light soiling to endpapers and leafends, internally clean. Vibrant cloth binding, a near fine example. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $4.00 retail price on rear flap, numerous archival tape repairs to verso, closed tears, some loss at head of the spine, previously folded, a presentable copy.

Inscribed by Fleet Admiral William F. “Bull” Halsey, and the co-author, to Chief Yeoman James W. Sands, USN, who assisted in the preparation of the typescript for Admiral Halsey’s Story. Halsey specifically acknowledges Sands by name in the foreword. Inscription on the half title reads: “To J.W. Sands – with gratitude for assistance in the preparation of this book – W.F. Halsey / And with the additional thanks for his friend / J. Bryan III.”
Fleet Admiral William F. Halsey (1882-1959) was an American Navy admiral during World War II, commanding the South Pacific area. He oversaw Allied forces during the Battle for Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. After promotion to the command of the Third Fleet, he took part in the Battle for Leyte Gulf, which was the largest naval battle of the Second World War and, by some accounts, the largest naval battle in history. He retired in 1947. Halsey died in 1959 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
