Description

First edition, first issue of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, in the scarce blue cloth.

Octavo, 366pp, [2]. Publisher’s blue cloth with title in gilt on spine, decorative gilt and black illustrations on cover. Includes 174 illustrations by E.W. Kemble. Spine rebacked with original spine laid down, hinges reinforced and stabilized. Restoration to bumped lower corner of front panel. Some loss of gilt on the spine. Archival tissue repair to closed tear on rear endpaper. Occasional soiling and blemishes throughout.

This work is the first issue, with the following first issue points, including a publication date of 1885 on title page, with 1884 on copyright page, “Huck Decided to Leave” on page [9], illustration “Him and another Man” incorrectly listed as page “88” on page 13, misprint “was” for “saw” on page 57, on page 155 the last “5” in page number is in the wrong font, the “l” is missing from “Col.” on page 143, no signature “11” on page 161 and page 283 being a cancel. The heliotype slug appears on the Twain bust, with the cloth visible.
