A short Southern novel centered on Hank Tawes, an honest Tennessee sheriff whose life is undone by his involvement with a young woman connected to a moonshining family. Originally published in The Sewanee Review, An Exile was later adapted into the 1970 film I Walk the Line, starring Gregory Peck and Tuesday Weld, with a soundtrack by Johnny Cash.
