The volume records the Institution’s work during 1857. It includes the annual report of Professor Joseph Henry, an American physicist and the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Joseph Le Conte contributes lectures on coal and Spencer F. Baird reports on the museum collections. The volume also documents the Board’s investigation of Samuel F. B. Morse’s charges against Professor Henry.
