Octavo, 315pp, [1]. Brown cloth, title in gilt on front cover and spine. Brown topstain, with decorative endpapers. Light rubbing to covers, and head and tail of spine. No additional printings listed on copyright page. This is the first state of the text, with “Wood ducks quacked and splashed” on Page 17. Previous ownership inscription on front flyleaf, dated 1928. In the first state dust jacket, with $2.50 retail price and no blurb by Crawford on the front panel. Light wear to corners, with faint sunning to spine, a few pinholes at folds.

Julia Peterkin (1880-1961) received the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1929 for her work Scarlet Sister Mary. This piece, Black April, directly preceded Scarlet Sister Mary. Peterkin is also remembered for her landmark collaboration with photographer Doris Ulmann titled Roll, Jordan Roll, which depicts a group of former slaves and their descendants in the Gullah region of South Carolina.
