Octavo, xii, [2], 336pp. Maroon hardcover, title in gilt on tan cloth spine. Stated “First printing, 1998 on copyright page, no additional printings listed. Solid text block, fine condition. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $26.95 retail price on front flap, fine condition.

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To Senator Tom Hayden / To a man who has spent a life time guided by the ancient command of Isaiah, ‘To undue their heavy burdens and let the oppressed go free.’ America owes you a great deal. The recipient of this copy, Tom Hayden (1939-2016), was an anti-war and pro-civil rights activist. Hayden led protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention and stood trial during the “Chicago Seven” case. He was elected to the California State Assembly from 1982-1992, and then the California Senate from 1992-2000.
