Published in 1985, Blood Meridian is now widely regarded as Cormac McCarthy’s masterpiece and one of the defining works of late twentieth-century American literature. A radical reimagining of the Western, the novel draws on the historical record of the Glanton gang to produce a stark meditation on violence and moral order, rendered in McCarthy’s distinctive, biblical prose. It was a finalist for the 1985 National Book Critics Circle Award, and its reputation has grown since its publication.
