General Braxton Bragg (1817-1876) was a career military officer in the United States Army and later a senior commander in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He graduated from West Point in 1837 and served in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War. Bragg was appointed a full general in the Confederate Army in 1862, and he commanded the Army of Tennessee in several major battles, including the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Perryville, and the Battle of Chickamauga. Despite his initial successes, Bragg’s tenure was marked by internal disputes and strategic failures, leading to his eventual resignation from field command in 1864.
