First edition of Camp and Field Life of the Fifth New York Volunteer Infantry by Alfred Davenport, from the library of a Union officer, Capt. Thomas R. Martin.

Octavo, 485pp. Red cloth, title in gilt on spine, illustration in gilt on front cover. Rubbing to cloth, some loss on spine, both hinges starting, solid text block. Previous ownership label on front free endpaper, gift dedication of Capt. Martin on front flyleaf. Frontispiece and one full-page illustration of camp life. Includes a variety of clippings and notes from the family of Captain Martin. (Nevins I: 79) (Dornbusch I: N175).

This copy belonged to a member of the Fifth New York Volunteer Infantry, Capt. Thomas R. Martin (1839-1892). Captain Martin rose through the ranks from Private to Captain by the time of his discharge in 1863. During his service, he was wounded at the Second Battle of Bull Run in 1862. Martin died in 1892 in Waterbury, Connecticut.
