Description

Inscribed first edition of Captain Brand, of the “Centipede,” from the author, Capt. Henry A. Wise, to Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren.

Octavo, 299pp, [4pp advertisements]. Publisher’s brown pebbled cloth, title in gilt on spine. Rebacked with the original cloth laid down. Frontispiece portrait, with 19 additional black and white engraved plates. Occasional toning and spotting throughout. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: “To Admiral John A. Dahlgren, U.S.N. From his sincere friend, The Author. Washington. Oct., 1864.”

This copy is inscribed by the author to his longtime friend and the man whom he succeeded as the Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance in 1863, Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren, U.S.N. This inscription is dated October 1864, when Dahlgren was in command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron.
