The Carl Hayden Golden Anniversary Dinner was held on November 17, 1961, at the Westward Ho Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona, honoring Senator Carl T. Hayden on the fiftieth anniversary of his service in Congress. President John F. Kennedy and Vice President Lyndon Johnson attended and delivered remarks at the event.
Sen. Carl Hayden (1877-1972) had represented Arizona since its admission to statehood in 1912, first in the House of Representatives and later in the Senate, where he became Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and President pro tempore of the Senate. The day before this event in Arizona, Hayden became third in the line of presidential succession with the death of Speaker Sam Rayburn. After the death of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, Hayden became second in the line of succession until the election of Vice President Hubert Humphrey in 1965. When asked of his plans if he had succeeded to the presidency, Hayden replied, “I’d call Congress together, have the House elect a new speaker, and then I’d resign and let him become president.”
