Description
Two books signed by C.S. Lewis, his childhood copies of Charmides and Selected Prose by Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde was one of Lewis’ favorite authors as a child.
Small octavo, [two volumes], 147pp, [8pp ads]; 160pp. Both volumes in pale blue cloth, title in gilt on spines. Solid text blocks, small stains to covers, faint sunning to spines, light wear to tips. A touch of foxing to edges. Signature of a young C.S. Lewis on the front free endpaper of each volume.
Provenance: Dr. Edwin W. Brown, a physician and C.S. Lewis collector, whose archive was acquired by Taylor University in Upland, Indiana in 1997. Brown’s labels with his signature laid in. Brown states that Lewis received these copies around age 14 and signed both copies. Both books, along with other volumes, were given to a friend of Lewis while he was at Cambridge in the 1950s. Brown obtained these copies from the son of Lewis’ Cambridge friend.
