Octavo, xxiii, 570pp. Red cloth, title in gilt on spine with decorative gilt cover. Stated “First Printed In May 1943” on copyright page. Illustrated end papers with maps of Cincinnati. In the publisher’s scarce dust jacket, $3.50 on front flap, archival repairs on back side of jacket, bright illustrations.

Inscribed by James Garfield Stewart, the mayor of Cincinnati and justice on the Ohio Supreme Court. Inscription reads: “July 1, 1943, Cordially, James Garfield Stewart. Mayor of Cincinnati.” A unique and scarce book.

Mayor James Garfield Stewart (1880-1959) was a republican politician from Cincinnati. His son, Potter Stewart, was an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, appointed by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1958 through a recess appointment. He would serve until 1981. Upon his retirement, President Ronald Reagan would appoint the first woman, Sandra Day O’Conner, to fill the vacancy.
