Description

Commissioning of the USS Harry Truman, signed by President Bill Clinton.

Octavo, [44pp]. Blue hardcover, emblem of the ship in gilt foil on front cover, title in gilt on front panel. Signed on the front free endpaper by President Bill Clinton, Secretary of the Navy John H. Dalton and Captain of the USS Harry S. Truman, Thomas G. Otterbein. Includes letter from Captain Otterbein to Mrs. Drucie Snyder Horton, thanking her for her participation in the commissioning ceremony. This scarce signed book is from the estate of Mrs. Drucie Snyder Horton, the daughter of John W. Snyder, the Secretary of the Treasury during the Truman administration.

Comments: Mrs. Drucie Snyder Horton was the daughter of Harry Truman’s confidant, John W. Snyder. She was a close friend of Margaret Truman, who served as her Maid of Honor at her wedding. At the 1998 commissioning of the Harry S. Truman Nimitz Class aircraft carrier, Mrs. Horton filled in for an ailing Margaret Truman and christened the ship, instructing the assembled sailors to: “Man this ship and bring her to life!.”
