The notes by James K. Polk were written during the Twenty-Fifth Congress (1837-1839), when Polk presided as Speaker of the House. The notes include references to house bills currently being discussed, with specific references to the following: An appropriations bill for the continuation of the Cumberland Road in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois; Procedural issues pertaining to the reading of bills on the House floor; Authorization to purchase treasury notes; References to Cherokee removal and other detailed notes about procedural issues.
