Signed first edition of Crusade in Europe by Dwight Eisenhower, inscribed to Colonel John Bowen.

Octavo, xiv, [2], 559pp. Publishers tan cloth, title printed on spine. Title on spine is worn. Illustrated endpapers. Stated “first edition” on copyright page, noting that it follows the limited edition which was published the same year. Publishers first edition dust jacket, $5.00 on front flap, bright illustrations on cover and spine, wear along top edge, tape repair to backside of spine.

Inscribed on half title by Dwight D. Eisenhower to Colonel John Bowen: “For Colonel John Bowen – A brilliant troop commander of World War II, and an invaluable post-war assistant in the Pentagon. With best wishes and warm regard from his friend. Dwight Eisenhower.” President Eisenhower would award John W. Bowen the Army Distinguished Service Medal in 1956.

Comments: General John William Bowen graduated from West Point in 1930. He would serve a lifelong career in the army, with tours of service in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was recommended for the position of Secretary of the General Staff by George C. Marshall, with General Eisenhower noting that Bowen “would be an ideal selection.” His future postings included Commanding Officer of the 26th Infantry Division, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Eighth Army in Korea, Commanding General of the 18th Airborne Division and commander of Fort Bragg. He left the army as a General in 1968.
