Description

Signed by King Edward and Wallis Simpson, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the first edition of Dragon Harvest by Upton Sinclair.

Octavo, viii, 703pp. Red cloth, title stamped in silver gilt on the cover. The first printing, with no additional printings noted. Appears unread. Notable loss of cloth at the head of the spine, light sunning, both covered by the dust jacket. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $3.00 on the front flap, sunning to the spine, shallow chipping, a very good example.

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “Presented to The Merchant Marine Library by / Wallis Windsor / Edward / Newport, R.I. August 1945.”

In August 1945, Edward, Duke of Windsor, made a visit to the United States at the close of the Second World War while still serving as Governor of the Bahamas. He was in Washington on August 14, 1945, when President Harry S. Truman announced the Japanese surrender.

Edward and Wallis returned to England in October 1945, but lived much of the rest of their lives in retirement in France.
