Octavo, 31pp. Brown cloth, title in gilt on spine. Stated “First Edition August, 1962” on copyright page. Frontispiece portrait by Joseph Cummings Chase, solid text block. Offsetting to endpapers, faint foxing to frontispiece and title page. In the publisher’s dust jacket, no retail price at publication, touch of shelf wear, two tape repairs to verso, a bright example.

Signed on the front free endpaper: “For Gene Robens, With the cordial regard of an old comrade-in-arms. Douglas MacArthur.”

Colonel Gene A. Robens (1912-2006) was a member of General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s staff in 1944, tasked with planning D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. He previously served in the Western Defense and Fourth Army Headquarters in San Francisco, with responsibility for the classified reports concerning the war efforts in the Pacific and communications to Washington, D.C. After the war, Robens served on General Bradley’s staff, with responsibility for Army Reserve Forces and ROTC affairs, the highest staff officer in the Department of the Army.
