General Paik Sun Yup (1920-2020) commanded the Republic of Korea Army’s 1st Infantry Division during the defense of the Pusan Perimeter during the Korean War. He later served as army chief of staff and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Korea. In 1953, he became the first four-star general in South Korean history. After retiring from military service, Paik served as South Korea’s ambassador to France, Canada, and several other countries.
