Octavo, viii, 376pp. Beige cloth, title stamped in blue on the spine. The first printing, with no other printings noted, “1” next to publisher’s imprint. Light toning to leaves, internally clean. In the publisher’s dust jacket, tape reinforcement to verso, closed tear at the head of the spine and front flap, bright illustrations, a near fine example. This work was first issued in the United States in 1948, and not translated into Italian until his death in 1978.
Franco Maugeri (1898-1958) was an Italian naval officer who served in the Regia Marina during both World Wars. During World War II, Maugeri held several key roles, including head of the Servizio Informazioni Segrete (Italian Naval Intelligence) and later commander of the naval base at La Maddalena. Following the Armistice of Cassibile in 1943, he supported cooperation with the Allies and played a role in the transition of Italian naval forces to the co-belligerent side. For his services, he was awarded the United States Legion of Merit.
