Giants in the Earth follows Norwegian immigrant homesteaders on the Dakota prairie and remains Rølvaag’s best-known work. The novel was first published in Norwegian in two volumes before appearing in this English-language edition in 1927. It was followed by Peder Victorious (1929) and Their Fathers’ God (1931).
