First Edition | First Printing

Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, first edition, first printing in scarce first state dust jacket.

Octavo, [vi], 1037pp, [5pp, blank]. Original gray cloth, title in blue on spine and front cover. Contains “Set up and electrotyped. Published May, 1936” on copyright page, with no mention of other printings. Clean text block, solid binding, tape remnant on rear endpaper. Touch of wear to cloth at top edge of spine, a near fine copy. Housed in custom brown leather clamshell, title in gilt on spine, lined in tan linen.

Includes the publisher’s first state dust jacket, price clipped, with “Gone With The Wind” appearing in right side column of “Macmillan Spring Novels” advertisement on back panel, free of any repairs. Dust jacket with short, closed tear at hinge of spine, shallow chipping to top edge of spine, exceptionally bright illustrations, a near fine example.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was adapted into a feature film in 1939. According to a Harris Poll in 2014, this book remains the “second favorite book of American readers, just behind the Bible.”
