Description

Inscribed copy of Have Faith In Massachusetts by Calvin Coolidge. Octavo, x, 275pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine and cover. Soiling to cloth on front panel. Frontispiece portrait with tissue cover. Foxing to title page and frontispiece portrait, but limited to the first couple of pages of the book. In scarce publishers dust jacket, with bright illustrations on cover and spine, chips along bottom edge, some toning to spine. Inscribed on front free endpaper by author and future president, Calvin Coolidge: “To Clifford Walker / with regards / June 1920.” An exceptional copy.

Comments: The recipient of this book, Clifford Walker, was the 52nd Governor of Georgia. He served two terms as governor, even after it was revealed by the press in 1924 that he was an active member of the KKK. At the time of publication of this book, Clifford Walker was serving as the Attorney General of Georgia. In 1920, Calvin Coolidge was serving as Governor of Massachusetts. His term as governor brought him to national prominence, with his reaction to the Boston Police Strike. He famously noted that “…There is no right to strike against the public safety by anyone, anywhere, anytime…” Shortly after bringing the strike under control, he was offered the position of Vice President, serving alongside Warren G. Harding.
