Description

Octavo, x, 275pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine and cover. Light wear along edges, small stains to cloth on front cover. In scarce publishers dust jacket, very good, with bright illustrations on cover and spine, chips along bottom edge, stain on back panel, spine reinforced along seams. Inscribed on front free endpaper by author and future president, Calvin Coolidge: “To Lloyd B. Hayes / With regards / Calvin Coolidge / June 1920.” An exceptional copy.
Comments: At the time of publication of this book, Calvin Coolidge was serving as Governor of Massachusetts. His term as governor brought him to national prominence, with his reaction to the Boston Police Strike. He famously noted that “…There is no right to strike against the public safety by anyone, anywhere, anytime…” Shortly after bringing the strike under control, he was offered the position of Vice President, serving alongside Warren G. Harding.
