Description

First edition of High Sierra by W.R. Burnett.

Octavo, 292pp. Orange cloth, title stamped in gray on spine, author’s initials stamped on cover. Top edge stained red. Stated “first edition” on copyright page. Light toning to endpapers, shelf wear to bottom edge of volume, closed tears to pages 135-136. In publisher’s original illustrated dust jacket, retail price of $2.00 on front flap, toning to interior and spine, light rubbing along top edge, chipping and tears to edges and corners. Business reply card from the publisher laid-in. A nice example.

High Sierra was the basis for the 1941 film noir of the same name, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino. The film provided Bogart the breakthrough he needed to move from supporting actor to leading man.
