Octavo, [three volumes], xxxviii, 488pp; xviii, 480pp; xvii, 524pp. Three quarter leather bound, title in gilt over morocco label, raised bands with decorative gilt compartments on spine. Marbled boards, edges, and endpapers. Stated “Twenty Third Edition” on title page. Solid text blocks, marbled covers rubbed, lightly bumped tips. Small dent to front cover of volume three. Frontispiece with tissue cover in each volume, two fold-out maps and facsimile letter. Light foxing to maps, clean text throughout. (Sabin 65264)

This work on the conquest of Mexico is often praised for its historical scholarship and storytelling. It is one of the landmark historical works detailing the subjugation of the Aztec people at the hands of the Spanish.
