Octavo, [three volumes], xxx, 442pp; xvi, 439pp; xvi, 455pp, [1]. Bound in period calf, title in gilt over red morocco label, raised bands with decorative gilt compartments on spine. Sprinkled edges. Light rubbing to gilt on spine, Volume II with a repair to the top edge of the spine. Previous bookseller’s tag on rear pastedown endpaper of each volume. Frontispiece with tissue cover in each volume, two fold-out maps and facsimile letter. Light foxing to maps, clean text throughout. (Sabin 65263) (BAL 16340) An attractive set.

This work on the conquest of Mexico is often praised for its historical scholarship and storytelling. It is one of the landmark historical works detailing the subjugation of the Aztec people at the hands of the Spanish.
