Description

Signed memoirs of Adolf Hitler’s chief interpreter, Dr. Paul Schmidt, titled Hitler’s Interpreter: The Secret History of German Diplomacy.

Octavo, 286pp. Red cloth, title stamped on spine. Cloth at spine has been repaired and reattached, fully covered by dust jacket. Stated “first printing” on copyright page. In the publisher’s scarce first state jacket, $4.00 retail price on front flap, light chipping along top edge, faint toning to spine, a very good example. Signed by the author: “To Stephen W. Bumball, with best wishes from Paul Schmidt. Munich, 11th November, 1961.” An exceptionally rare book to find signed by Dr. Schmidt.

Paul Schmidt (1899-1970) served in the German Foreign Ministry from 1923-1945 and became Hitler’s chief interpreter for the Third Reich. He was fluent in at least 18 languages and participated in the negotiations over the Munich Agreement and the surrender of France. He was captured by American forces in 1945, then freed in 1948. He went on to head the Munich Institute for Languages and write his extensive memoirs.
