Octavo, xxxviii, [1], 275pp. Blue cloth, title stamped in green and silver on spine. Stated “First Edition / CL” on the copyright page. Top edge dyed green. Light toning to upper quarter of cloth boards. Offsetting to endpapers from dust jacket. Previous bookseller’s label to front endpaper. With a preface by Theodore Roosevelt Jr., frontispiece portrait, and numerous photographic plates. In the publisher’s near fine dust jacket, price clipped, touch of shelf wear, shallow chipping along edges of jacket. (Not found in Arctic Bibliography)
Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “This is written for Andrew Fletcher by Vilhjalmur Stefansson at the request of their friend, Gudrun Camp. January 28, 1940.”
Stefansson’s account surveys Icelandic history, literature, education, agriculture, fisheries, commerce, communications, tourism, and emigration, presenting Iceland as an early democratic republic with historic connections to North America.
