Octavo, 318pp, [2]. Yellow cloth, title stamped in black on the spine. The first printing, with “44914-T” code on the copyright page. Bookplate of James W. Fitzgibbon on the front pastedown. Illustrated with photographs and diagrams. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $6.95 retail price on the front flap, no later printings noted, sunning along the spine and front panel, a few short closed tears, a very good example.
Inscribed on the half title: “To Jim and Margaret Fitzgibbon / with Anne’s and my dearest love / Buckminster Fuller / Sept. 26, 1963.”
Dr. James W. Fitzgibbon was a longtime collaborator in the development and practical application of Fuller’s geodesic structures. Fitzgibbon worked closely with Fuller beginning in the late 1940s and helped translate Fuller’s experimental designs into built projects. In 1956, they constructed a 384-foot-diameter geodesic dome for the Union Tank Car Company in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Designed through their firm Synergetics, it was then the world’s largest free-span structure.
