Octavo, [two volumes], xiv, [2], 547pp; xvi, 540pp. Publisher’s green cloth, title in gilt on spine. Gilt title and map of Africa impressed on front covers. Brown endpapers, bookseller’s label on rear pastedown of Volume I. Some wear to corners, spine ends and hinges. Title page and tissue of Volume I reinforced along gutter with tape. Complete with 52 engraved plates, with one color plate in Volume II. Includes 3 folding maps housed in pocket at rear of each volume, all with splits along folds, some wear. (Hosken 189)

Sir Henry M. Stanley was famous for his explorations of central Africa. This book recounts his journey to relieve Emin Pasha, the besieged Governor of Equatoria. This book was an international best seller, selling 150,000 copies shortly after publication in 1890.
