Octavo, [two volumes], xiv, [2], 547pp; xvi, 540pp. Publisher’s three quarter red leather, titles in gilt on spines, embossed design on spines. Marbled covers, light shelf wear and wear along bottom edge of text block. Marbled endpapers, with previous bookseller’s sticker on rear endpaper of Volume 1. Complete with frontispiece portraits in both volumes, 52 engraved plates, color plate in Volume II. Includes 3 folding maps housed in rear pocket of each volume. Maps all in near fine condition with toning, but stable. (Hosken, p. 189) A scarce set in the publisher’s three quarter red leather.

Sir Henry Stanley was famous for his exploration of central Africa. This book recounts his journey to relieve Emin Pasha, the besieged Governor of Equatoria. The book was an international best seller, selling 150,000 copies shortly after publication in 1890.
