General Walter Warlimont served as Senior Operations Staff Officer to General Wilhelm Keitel, assisting in the development of strategic war plans, including the invasion of Poland, France and Russia. As the war progressed, he was a primary contact between German High Command and the Vichy Government in France and Field Marshal Erwin Rommel in Africa. Warlimont was injured in the 1944 assassination plot against Hitler, with Hitler believing that Warlimont may have been involved. He was relieved of duty soon after due to dizzy spells from the bombing. After the war, Warlimont was sentenced at Nuremberg to 18 years in prison, but was released in 1954. In retirement, he wrote this book and died in 1976.
