Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: “To J.B. West, the most gorgeous jaded-dandy (18th, 19th or 20th Century) I have ever known. With admiration for his encyclopedic mind and funny bone humor. Mary Van Rensselaer Thayer.”

J.B. West (1912-1983) was the 6th White House Chief Usher, serving from 1957-1969. He wrote his memoirs in 1973, titled Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First Ladies. West was succeeded as Chief Usher by Rex Scouten.
