Inscribed by the author on the half-title: “To Zella and J.B., without whose aid and unflagging devotion this history of an era could not have been set down. With love, Molly Mary Van Rensselaer Thayer.”

J.B. West (1912-1983) was the 6th White House Chief Usher, serving from 1957-1969. He wrote his memoirs in 1973, titled Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First Ladies. West was succeeded as Chief Usher by Rex Scouten.
