Octavo, x, [2], [9]-428pp, [plates], [20pp ads]. Brown cloth, title stamped in gilt on the spine. Publisher’s original cloth spine laid over matching brown cloth. Hinges reinforced. Occasional foxing and toning throughout. This copy is complete, with an illustrated title page, maps and sixteen lithographed plates.

Inscribed by Louis Agassiz to the Rev. Zadock Thompson, Vermont naturalist and professor at the University of Vermont. Thompson’s work on the fishes and natural history of Vermont was cited by Agassiz and other leading American naturalists. Inscription reads: “Rev. Z. Thompson / with the respects / of L. Agassiz.”
The volume includes James Elliot Cabot’s narrative of the 1848 expedition. Agassiz contributed the scientific account of the region’s geology, plants, and animals.
