Description

Presentation copy of Woodrow Wilson’s Leaders of Men, from former Illinois Governor Adlai E. Stevenson to Chicago Mayor, Richard J. Daley.

Octavo, viii, [2], 70pp. Orange cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine. Rubbing to spine, water remnant on front cover, not impacting text or boards. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, near fine condition, retail price on the front flap, light stain to front panel, otherwise a fine example. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To Dick Daley – Harold Dodds, then President of Princeton, sent this to me for Christmas in 1952 after my first defeat – and I send it to you before your next victory! Adlai E. Stevenson. Christmas, 1957.” An exceptional association copy.

This book was presented to Mayor Richard J. Daley about a year before he was elected to a second term. Shortly thereafter, at the 1960 Democratic National Convention, it was Richard Daley, the head of the Illinois delegation, who told Stevenson that he did not have enough Democratic support to challenge the nomination of John F. Kennedy. Provenance: From the private collection of Patrick McClain (1926-2020), aide to Mayor Richard M. Daley.
