Typed letter signed by Charles A. Lindbergh, enclosing a $1,000 contribution to the Charles H. Land Fund in support of research by Dr. L. Laszlo Schwartz. Schwartz was writing a biography of Dr. Charles H. Land, Lindbergh’s maternal grandfather and the inventor of porcelain and gold teeth crowns.
Wood frame, beige matte, measures 19″ x 12″. Photograph of Lindbergh mounted opposite the letter. Not examined outside of the frame.
Full letter reads: “Scotts Cove / Darien, Conn. / Feb. 1, 1958 / Dear Dr. Smith: I enclose a check for one thousand dollars as a contribution to the Charles H. Land Fund, to be used in connection with the projects Dr. L. Laszlo Schwartz is carrying on under this fund./ With best wishes, Charles A. Lindbergh.”
Lindbergh hoped to finance a biography of his grandfather, Dr. Charles H. Land, with the help of dental historian, Dr. L. Laszlo Schwartz. By 1960, it was clear to Lindbergh and Schwartz that publishers were not interested in a full-length biography. The research into Dr. Land resulted in numerous articles in the Journal of American College Dentists, but not a full-length biography. The letter was addressed to Dr. Gilbert P. Smith, the dean of the Columbia Dental School.
