Description

Letter from Governor Jimmy Carter to veteran political consultant Hal Evry, thanking him for sending a copy of his book, The Selling of a Candidate.

Printed on Governor of Georgia stationery, previously folded, in near fine condition. The letter starts with a thank you for sending a copy of The Selling of a Candidate, but Carter adds a long postscript: “Now I’ve read it & it’s good. I don’t agree with it all. I shook hands & made speeches for 4 years (600,000 & 1800 respectively) & won with little money – but I know from this experience that this is the hard way! J.C.”

What we look for in a candidate is lots of money, an I.Q. of 120 and his promise to keep his mouth shut. – Hal Evry (The Selling of a Candidate, 1971). Hal Evry was a political consultant who worked on 200+ political campaigns, across the ideological spectrum. He believed candidates should avoid controversial issues and focus on positive political attributes. He died in 1995.
